History of Lord's Acre

The Lord's Acre Project was founded in 1952 during the tenure of the late Rev. Raymus F. Hilliard, according to the 25th anniversary records that were written in 1978 by the late Zada Bodmer, official historian for Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church for many years. 'The next minister, Rev. Jim Morgan, is credited with organizing the Lord's Acre Festival into an event similar to what continues today.  The "Lord's Acre" name was derived from a beautiful idea by its originators and that is any proceeds generated from anything grown or sold on "God's ground" (the church property) would be given to the glory of God and His church. "Project" came from the commitment of members of the church to do "projects" that would create sales opportunities.

One reason United Methodists are able to accomplish great things is the church’s emphasis on “connectionalism.” It is common to hear United Methodist leaders speak of the denomination as “the connection.” This concept has been central to Methodism from its beginning.
