Memorial youth lead the way!

Strong adult leadership, a large number of participating youth and a common dedication to both fun and spiritual growth add up to one of the strongest youth programs in the Western Up County.  While Middle School age youth and High School age youth each form a separate group, all the youth participate in many of the activities that constitute the Memorial Youth Fellowship year-round program.

Memorial makes strong showing in annual Poolesville Relay For Life
When Poolesville Relay For Life held its first event in the town in 2006, Memorial Methodist Church fielded a team.  For the fourth straight year--on June 13th--Memorial participated with the 2009 version of "Team Memorial."  About twenty people were "official" members of the team and perhaps a dozen other members and friends of the congregation showed up at the Poolesville High School Athletic Field (the locale of the 2009 "walk") to support the church's showing.  Memorial is in fact the only church in the region to sponsor a team for all of the four years the event has been held.
Team Memorial assembled in Poolesville High School Athletic Field stands await beginning of 2009 Poolesville Relay For Life.

The purpose of Relay For Life events and the sixteen hours of walking that gives the event its name is for sponsoring organizations to raise funds on behalf of the American Cancer Society's extensive cancer research activities.  Each team member attempts to raise funds himself or herself and the team also raises funds through such activities as silent auctions, yard sales and other events.  Memorial team members had a very special and personal reason this year in participating in the walk--longtime member Becky Brooks died of cancer less than a month before the event.  Virtually every other member on the team roster had his or her special reason to participate, having lost a friend or family member to the dreaded disease or having a friend or family member who is a "survivor."

Team Memorial made an excellent showing this year.  Besides the impressive number of friends and members who were on the Athletic field on June 13th, team members raised about $4,000--putting them in the top ranks of the forty-plus teams that comprised Poolesville Relay For Life this year.
Relay For Life is just one of a number of regional and national causes that Memorial supports, ranging from financial support of a missionary in Liberia, to an annual weeklong trip to repair and renovate homes of low-income people in Appalachia, to serving monthly meals at a nearby facility for recovering low-income substance abusers.
